TL;DR
  • Google has introduced a new universal Gemini agent that can complete multi-step tasks across apps without constant user input.
  • The agent works with Google Workspace, Slack, and Microsoft 365, maintains context across devices, and can use specialized AI sub-agents.
  • It’s currently available only to enterprise customers in private preview, with no word on a wider consumer release.

AI tools have become pretty good at helping us get things done, but we still have a lot of work to do ourselves. Sure, Gemini can summarize a lengthy email thread, help draft a document, or pull information from a spreadsheet. But what if you could tell it what you want to accomplish and let it handle the rest?

That’s pretty much what Google is working toward with its latest announcement. At Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud introduced a new Gemini agent that can take on entire tasks, work across different apps, and deliver finished results without requiring you to guide it through every step.

For instance, you’re preparing for an important meeting. Instead of manually scouring emails, finding relevant documents in Drive, checking the latest figures in Sheets, and putting everything together, you could ask Gemini to prepare a briefing. The agent could handle those individual steps, gather the necessary information, and have everything ready when you need it.

What makes this particularly interesting is that Gemini isn’t restricted to Google’s apps — it can also work with services like Slack and Microsoft 365. You can access it from your phone, desktop, or browser, and since everything runs in the cloud, the agent can maintain context across your connected devices. So if you start a task on your laptop and later switch to your phone, you won’t have to explain everything again.

Google is taking the coworker idea quite literally, too. The agent can bring in specialized AI sub-agents to handle different parts of a task, and businesses can even give these AI coworkers their own identities and email addresses. It’s a little strange to imagine an AI having its own work email, but it also makes sense if companies want employees to collaborate with these agents much like they would with another colleague.

Unfortunately, you can’t try this with your personal Gemini account just yet. For now, the agent is limited to enterprise customers in a private preview, and Google hasn’t said whether it plans to bring it to everyone else. That said, the idea isn’t entirely new. You might remember Gemini Spark, which Google introduced earlier this year to help users complete tasks across Workspace and the web.

Of course, we’ll have to see how reliably Google’s new agent handles complicated tasks in practice. But if this is where Gemini is heading, the days of treating AI as just another chatbot might eventually be behind us.
