Google is working on a simpler, faster way to use Gmail's 'Help Me Write' feature
Oct 12, 2026 — 5:57 AM ET

- Google is working to make Gmail’s “Help Me Write” feature easier to access and use.
- When composing a new email, Gmail could start showing a “Describe your message” prompt box by default.
- It could also let users switch between generated drafts with dedicated undo and redo buttons.
Since it first launched the “Help Me Write” feature in Gmail, Google has steadily improved it to make drafts easier to edit, adapt to the way you normally write, and even scan your Drive files and previous emails for relevant context. However, using it still involves several steps, introducing unnecessary friction. Now, it seems Google is finally working to fix that.

If you’ve been annoyed by the surprising number of steps it takes to get “Help Me Write” to draft an email for you, there might be some good news on the way. Digging through the latest version of the Gmail app (v2026.10.05.993506826), we found evidence that Google is working to change how the feature works on mobile.
Right now, you can either use a swipe gesture or tap the pencil icon in the header to start drafting an email with “Help Me Write.” Once you describe what you want, it opens a bottom sheet with the drafted email, which you can adjust to your needs before finally tapping “Insert” to add it to the email composer.
In a future update, this process could get whittled down to just two steps. Gmail could show a new “Describe your message” prompt box at the bottom. Once you describe what you need, it will draft the email and insert it directly into the message composer. Options to change the message’s tone will appear at the bottom, so you can make adjustments before sending the email.
Users will also be able to switch between the original draft and other variations using the undo and redo buttons beside the prompt box. This could prove useful if you make changes and realize a previous version was better; you’ll be able to simply tap the undo button to restore it.
This new, easier-to-use “Help Me Write” experience isn’t widely available yet. However, it already appears to be working properly already, so Google might be close to rolling it out. We’ll keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available.
