Digital Wellbeing Hands-On
TL;DR
  • You can finally toggle Digital Wellbeing’s grayscale mode in your phone’s quick settings.
  • Digital Wellbeing is also being updated with an icon in the app drawer and a Night Light option in Wind Down settings.
  • New visual tweaks have been added, too.

Digital Wellbeing — Google’s new Android 9 Pie feature that helps track your phone usage — is still in beta, which means Google is trying to fine-tune the app before it rolls out to everyone in the next few months. The latest Digital Wellbeing update brings a handful of small, yet welcome improvements.

Fun fact: Taking a screenshot with grayscale turned on will still result in a colored screenshot.

Most notably, version 0.2.211650599 of the app brings a new toggle to the quick settings menu that allows you to turn on/off grayscale mode. Previously, you’d need to go to your settings menu, select Digital Wellbeing, select Wind Down, and toggle the grayscale option. Now you can do it right from your quick settings, just like you can with Night Light.

Speaking of Night Light, you can now change Night Light settings from within the Wind Down section of Digital Wellbeing.

Now, you don’t even have to navigate to your settings menu to access Digital Wellbeing — there’s a new option that lets you add an icon to your app drawer (yes!). I’m constantly playing with the settings in this app, so I’m pretty happy about this change.

While you can add a Digital Wellbeing shortcut to your app drawer, you still can’t add a Dashboard shortcut. Luckily, Action Launcher developer Chris Lacy recently made an app for that.

Lastly, the release notes state that the Dashboard section is getting a few visual improvements.

The update is rolling out now in the Play Store.
