Android opens enrollment for program that brings one-tap sideloading for app stores
Oct 27, 2026 — 3:38 PM ET

- Third-party Android app stores can now enroll in the Registered App Stores program.
- App stores that enroll will get a new streamlined installation flow when it launches on December 1.
- This change should make sideloading third-party app stores easier for users.
Earlier this year, Google announced plans to roll out a new program that would allow third-party app stores to officially register with Android. The change stems from a proposed settlement between Google and Epic Games from last year. Google has now provided an update on this program.
According to the Mountain View-based firm, third-party app stores can now enroll in the Register App Stores program starting today. Enrollment is optional, but the developers who do will get a new streamlined installation flow when it launches on December 1. Stores that don’t enroll won’t see any change in their installation flow. The program is available for devices running Android 17 QPR2 and later for users outside of the US.
“In March, we announced the Registered App Stores program to give third-party app stores a more streamlined way to reach users while maintaining the safety and security of the Android ecosystem,” a Google spokesperson said. “Eligible app stores outside the US can now apply to register their stores ahead of the new simplified installation experience rolling out to users later this year.”
Do you think Google will make sideloading apps even more restrictive in the future?
The point of the Registered App Stores program is to make sideloading app stores easier. Stores that enroll will be able to provide one-tap app installs with no secondary system confirmation screens. They’ll also get automatic background updates and download progress indicators. Additionally, Google is offering early access to documentation, onboarding support, and new tools, including the Android Developer ID API.
Developers will have to pay an annual registration fee. However, the fee also covers the availability of new capabilities and operational support. Google adds that additional review fees will apply if a store’s catalog exceeds its threshold for malware.
While the program is starting outside of the US, it will eventually hit our shores. However, the company previously said that it plans to bring the program stateside once the court approves its settlement with Epic Games.
