TL;DR
  • Google’s releasing Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1 this afternoon, one week after distributing QPR2 Beta 7.
  • The big change in this release is a fix targeting major performance issues first introduced in QPR1.
  • Users affected by those problems can either register for the Beta, or wait for the QPR2 stable release later this year.

This time last week, Google was hooking its Pixel testing community up with the latest preview of its next big set of Android changes, with the release of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7. Usually we’re waiting a couple weeks between releases like that, but today Google’s already following it up with Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1.

Last time around, Google was pushing out fixes for a couple notable bugs — and according to Google’s launch notes, today’s point release contains more of the same. Or specifically, one big fix:

  • Severe UI stuttering and multi-second freezes under memory pressure from heavy page-reclaim thrashing and major page faults (Issue #571186734)

What does all that mean? Well, we also see Google’s Mishaal Rahman going around to let some Redditors know that Beta 7.1 should fix some of the bigger performance headaches that users started reporting in the wake of QPR1.

We polled you last month, and only a third of Pixel owners running QPR1 said they weren’t running into any problems — everyone else seemed to find something to complain about.

If your Pixel has been just short of unusable since installing QPR1, today’s Beta should (hopefully) sort you out. If you haven’t yet, you can register for Google’s Android Beta for Pixel program to get started — just be sure that you’ve got a safe copy of all your device’s data backed up first.

Don’t want to bother with the complications of running a Beta? No problem — so long as you can wait things out a little longer, QPR2 stable will be coming to Pixel devices everywhere later this year.
