DROID 2 Global Finally Gets Gingerbread Update

DROID 2 Global Finally Gets Gingerbread Update

Remember the good old Motorola DROID 2? And for that matter, remember Gingerbread?  At around the same time as Google unveiled Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus, Verizon broke good news to Motorola DROID 2 users: they can now upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The update hit devices back in very early September but was abruptly removed from Verizon’s website and from some DROID 2 handsets. Motorola opened a support forum to report on Gingerbread’s issues.  If you take a look, you will find a significant amount of errors and upset customers. But now, Verizon, Motorola, and …

Froyo is based on the Linux Kernel 2.6.32 and is is the last 2.x version of Android we should expect before Android 3.0 aka Gingerbread. This unreleased version of Android will run on Linux Kernel 2.6.33 and will become available from Google in the new year. After this release we should …

First Motorola DROID X OTA update already available?

First Motorola DROID X OTA update already available?

Rather unexpectedly, as I played around with the new Moto DROID X for Verizon, I discovered that there was an over the air update waiting for the device.  That update claimed to be able to upgrade the firmware from version 1.13.514 to 1.13.516. Except it didn’t work. The update process is reporting that there is insufficient storage space available to download the update.  The fact that there is over 6GB of built-in storage available and nearly 15GB of microSD storage available is something that it chooses to overlook. I don’t know what to make of this so far, but I’m …

Verizon working on HTC DROID Eris weather widget issue, still investigating other problems

Verizon working on HTC DROID Eris weather widget issue, still investigating other problems

I got word back from a Verizon Wireless rep moments ago regarding all of the complaints we are seeing in comments about the recent HTC DROID Eris Android 2.1 over the air firmware update.  We were told that the tech gurus are already working on the weather widget issue, but that other less frequently cited problems (such as missing call audio and message notification issues) have not been properly documented yet. I was advised that people with problems other than the weather widget should call Verizon Wireless or bring their DROID Eris to a Verizon Wireless retail store.  Verizon is …

OTA update for Motorola Droid a figment of our imaginations

OTA update for Motorola Droid a figment of our imaginations

Motorola, via their MotoMobile Twitter page has posted an official response to people questioning them on why they haven’t received the OTA update that had the internet abuzz last week.  It turns out that there was no update.  Tracing the original story back to its roots I found that Engadget had originally reported the story based on the fact that some of their forum users were claiming they had received the update.  I never received one myself and now I know why, but I can’t say that I’m not disappointed, the wait for 2.1 is getting harder and harder every …

Motorola Droid OTA update leading to 2.1 release?

Motorola Droid OTA update leading to 2.1 release?

Droid owners, it’s time to start getting excited.  Rumor has it that the new OTA update that is being rolled out right now is said to be part 1 of 2 and is actually a preparation for the update to 2.1.  The first OTA update, coming in at 61MB, was previously reported to have fixed a Facebook app glitch that prevented users from downloading the latest version.  While this is true, the sheer size of the update seems to offer more than a minor glitch fix.  After a little digging, people are also reporting that all internal testing is done …

Is Motorola developing a web-based Android application store?

Is Motorola developing a web-based Android application store?

The guys over at Android and Me uncovered a new online Android application store being developed by Motorola. Called SHOP4APPS, the new store will be web-based so you can access it using the mobile browser on your handset or the full browser on your desktop. Motorola is also reportedly developing a dedicated Android client, MotoAppStore, which will provide a user friendly front end to the online application store. This Motorola marketplace will supposedly incorporate several useful features including a ”MyLocker” section that stores and indexes all previous purchases, the ability to easily re-download and transfer applications to a new handset, auto-notification alerts when a purchased application has …

HTC DROID Eris OTA firmware updates starting

HTC DROID Eris OTA firmware updates starting

Verizon sent us a message last night telling us about the new HTC DROID Eris firmware update that has started going out to users.  This isn’t an update to a newer version of Android, which we are still expecting, but rather a simpler update that fixes some problems with the initial version of the device. Not all people experienced all of these issues, but there’s probably something in this update for most any DROID Eris user. The initial batch of users to get the update is pretty small, but it should start going out in large scale within a week …

Did you get your Motorola CLIQ update?

Did you get your Motorola CLIQ update?

Anyone who uses a Motorola CLIQ should have received an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Unfortunately this doesn’t upgrade the CLIQ from 1.5 to 1.6, or anything drastic like that. Instead, it updates the current version, Android 1.5, but seems to solve a lot of the original issues CLIQ users were facing. According to the official announcement, the update will predominantly help improve battery life, as well as how your Bluetooth devices pair with the CLIQ. Among other things, it will also help the responsiveness of the screen, which we know some people noticed more than others. It should be possible …

Sprint provide Hero over-the-air update 1.56.651.2

Sprint provide Hero over-the-air update 1.56.651.2

Those that are waiting for Android 2.0 on their Hero will take some peace in the following news, but will ultimately have to keep on waiting. Sprint have released an over the air (OTA) update for this device, but it is nothing to get excited about. The change to 1.56.651.2 is less of an upgrade as it is an update. Nonetheless, OTA roll-outs are always encouraging to see, and prove that carriers are dedicated to keeping their existing clients happy. The update itself is just under 3.6MB and should help improve your battery life, amoung other things. If you have …

Gallery: Upgrading to firmware RC29

Gallery: Upgrading to firmware RC29

Not too much to say here. Today my G1 told me that it was ready to install a new firmware update. While I didn’t know specifically at that time that it was talking about RC29, that is what I was expecting. Once I gave it the go-ahead, the entire update process took 6.5 minutes. Not much to say about it, really. It showed some graphics and progress bars as it copied and then flashed the firmware into place, but that’s about all. You can see the gallery of the entire process after the jump. I haven’t had much time to …

RC28 T-Mobile G1 update halted, RC29 on its way

RC28 T-Mobile G1 update halted, RC29 on its way

We mentioned last week that a new over the air update for the T-Mobile G1 was on its way.  It was called RC28 and was to address a bug with the Amazon MP3 store and offer a few enhancements.  Well, since the Android browser security flaw was found, Google and T-Mobile have halted the RC28 update that was already in progress and will instead be sending out an RC29 update that fixes the browser security hole. The new RC29 update started going out to users as of this past Monday. You can find slightly more information on RC29 and future …

Over the air update for T-Mobile G1 expected on October 23rd

Over the air update for T-Mobile G1 expected on October 23rd

That’s right, we’re expecting an OTA update of the G1 to start going out tomorrow – 24 hours after the device went on sale in stores. Supposedly the update will be fairly minor in order to make sure the system works and such. At least that is what Will, the admin T-Mobile’s Forums, says is the case. It seems that this update will fix a bug with the Amazon MP3 store as well as add a few unspecified “enhancements.” I seriously doubt any of those enhancements are going to be major, but they are welcome none the less. You can …
