Nexus Player Lollipop-1

The Nexus Player has been put out to pasture.

The launch device for Android TV is no longer available in the Google Store. Released in the fall of 2014 and co-developed with ASUS, the Nexus Player didn’t really take living rooms by storm. The issues with it were many, from flimsy hardware to limited storage and hard to excuse software issues, to a limited number of available apps.

The $99 price tag, while smaller than the price of some competitors out there including the Android TV-powered NVIDIA Shield console, left the Nexus Player in an awkward place where it had to prove its worth against more polished competitors and cheaper alternatives like Google’s own Chromecast. It just didn’t happen.

In the past months, Nexus Player was heavily discounted by retailers like Walmart and Amazon, while Staples, Newegg and others simply dropped the product from their catalog.

Now Google itself has turned the page. Customers who want an Android TV set-top box can opt for the $199 NVIDIA Shield, which continues to sell in the Google Store. And, when Xiaomi’s Mi Box arrives later this year, it could take the Nexus Player’s place in the $100 price bracket. Other Android TV devices are coming from Sharp and RCA, and you can always opt for a Sony Bravia or another Android TV smart TV.
