Google maps new icon AA

This is one of those why-haven’t-we-had-this-all-along kind of updates, but Google Maps has just launched the ability to tag your favorite locations with themed icons. Previously, everything was stars. Stars for work, stars for home, stars for your favorite bowling alley, etc.  Now you can make your Maps really feel like your own, and isn’t that really what the Android experience is all about?

Google has your back with an array of colorful icons that you can choose from. Feel like your home is your kingdom? Mark that baby with a palisaded castle. More of a outdoorsman? Log cabin is right up your alley. There’s even dragons and pirate ships. Not really sure how practical those are, but hey, it’s your map not mine.

One of the goals of this update is to make locations more visually distinct at a glance, which makes selecting location to navigate to much safer when you’re on the go. Whether or not you use it for that purpose is up to you, but either way you’re sure to have a more colorful and personalized experience with Google Maps going forward.

Can we also get the distance as the crow flies back, that was quiet a lose all those years ago

    • Andrew

Why would you want as the crow flies? What purpose does that serve unless you’re starting courier by drone business?

      • Eric Jensen Michels

More, it aloud you to quickly guess distance along multiple roots, Google maps is great and all, but the phone app is hard to change to the path you want to go if it is not it’s choice. Also if you are walking in an area were there is no path it is nice, I used to use if all the time

Fair enough. Depends where you are I guess, didn’t look at it that way.

It wouldn’t be very accurate at all in England, depends on the layout of where you live.

I got you, to me, it is more of one of those things that I used to use and it just disappear one day

    Lovely, thx Google!

I went to the play store and downloaded the update. The change icon option only showed for my home and work locations. Other favorites or places I frequent and labelled did not present this option.

How about being able to name your location favorites? I have about 50 of them and can’t tell them apart: “What was this fav again?” is now my usual thought instead of: “Ahh, here’s the cool Restaurant which isn’t on Google Maps, that I liked so much!”
