Coolpad, best known for its highly affordable gadgets, has a selection of new announcements at CES 2020 that are all pretty easy on the wallet. The new products include the Dyno 2 smartwatch and an update to its FamilyLabs management app. Perhaps most interestingly, Coolpad has an affordable 5G smartphone on the horizon as well. Affordable 5G phones could turn out to be the trend of 2020.

5G without breaking the bank

Priced at just $359, Coolpad’s first 5G smartphone is certainly inexpensive and quite an attractive entry point into the 5G market compared to 2019’s costly flagships. The phone slots into the company’s existing Coolpad Legacy range and will be part of a “family of 5G devices.”

We don’t have the full specifications for the Coolpad Legacy 5G phone yet, but here’s what we do know: There’s a large 6.53-inch FHD+ display powered by Pixelwork’s HDR technology, a 4,000mAh battery, dual 48MP and 8MP rear cameras, and a 16MP selfie cam. The handset also sports Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity with Tempow multi-device streaming.

This may sound like a tempting package, but we’re in for a bit of a wait for Coolpad’s affordable 5G phone. It’s not scheduled to hit markets until sometime in Q2 2020. But at $359, it might be worth a wait if you want to try out 5G on a budget.

Coolpad also showcased a preview of its upcoming Dyno 2, the successor to CES 2019’s original Dyno smartwatch. Designed as a 4G LTE wearable for kids, the Coolpad Dyno 2 keeps the same core features, including location tracking, “safe zones,” and voice and text messaging.

Where the Dyno 2 differs is with an upgraded chipset, which remains unspecified at the moment. Presumably, we’re looking at a chipset offering better battery life. The smartwatch also boasts a new application platform to enable new features. The Dyno 2 smartwatch is set to arrive in April 2020 with a $190 price tag.

Finally, Coolpad is bringing a major update to its FamilyLabs management app. Here’s the list of new features: Set & Monitor Digital Fences (Geo-Fences), Remote Lock/Unlock, Web Filtering, Daily Time Limits, Allow/Restrict Apps, Restrict Usage Times, Manage Contacts and Calls, Alerts, Alarms & Reminders, Battery Monitoring, and a FamilyLabs Home Screen Launcher.
