Wednesday was already one of the most anticipated new shows to debut on Netflix in 2022. However, it’s safe to say no one expected this spinoff of The Addams Family franchise to be this huge of a hit. The streaming service announced in late November 2022 that the first week of Wednesday’s release was the most watched English-language TV series on Netflix ever, beating out previous champions like Stranger Things and Bridgeton. So does that mean Wednesday Season 2 is in the works?

In this article, we go over whether or not Wednesday Season 2 on Netflix has been greenlighted and when we can expect to see the second season debut on the streaming service. We also speculate on what the storyline for Season 2 might be like. You can sign up for Netflix at the link below:

Netflix is still the leading premium streaming service, with over 200 million worldwide subscribers. It offers thousands of movies and TV shows to binge watch, including its always growing list of original films and series, including Stranger Things, The Witcher, Bridgerton, and many more.

Is there a Wednesday Season 2 in the works at Netflix?

On Friday, January 6, 2023, Netflix finally confirmed Wednesday season 2 is in the works. The renewal came almost two months after the show’s launch in mid-November 2022. The show continues to be a huge hit, and is now the second most-watched original English-language TV show in Netflix history, with 1.23 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days. Only the fourth season of Stranger Things beats it, and not by much at 1.35 billion hours watched in its first 28 days.

When might the series launch its second season?

Even if a second season is greenlighted immediately, a second season will likely take some time to go into production. We suspect that we won’t see a second season until sometime in early 2024 on Netflix.

What will the story be like for Wednesday Season 2?

The first season of eight episodes showed Wednesday entering the Nevermore Academy boarding school and becoming something of a supernatural detective as she solved who, or what, was committing murders of local townspeople. In an interview at TVLine, the show’s co-creator Al Gough stated that while the show will continue to focus mainly on Wednesday, a potential second season would show more of her extended family, including her dad Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and her mom Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

As far as Wednesday herself, Gough says that she has just started “learning there are shades of gray” in the world, and in people. She will likely learn even more about people, including her friends, that will take her in some hopefully unexpected directions if a second season is launched.

Will Tim Burton return as director for the second season?

Tim Burton made his TV directing debut with this series, as he was in charge of the first four episodes of Wednesday’s first season. Burton’s signature dark but humorous style was one of the main attractions for this show in the first place. It’s possible Burton could return to direct one or more episodes of a second season for Wednesday, but it’s also possible he has other projects in the works that could keep him from directing Wednesday Season 2. Hopefully, if a second season is approved, Burton will also return to the director’s chair.

Could we see a Wednesday spinoff series?

When you have a series as successful as Wednesday out of the gate, you have to think Netflix would be thinking about spinoff possibilities. After all, other successful Netflix shows like The Witcher and Bridgerton will be getting their own spinoff series shortly.

Thankfully, the world of the Addams Family is perfect for this kind of expansion. We could see a show focusing more on Wednesday’s parents, Gomez and Morticia, and we could also see a spinoff show for the characters in Nevermore Academy itself. While all of this is pure speculation, you can bet it’s been brought up at Netflix’s offices, so we will have to see if this comes to pass.

That’s all we know currently about Wednesday Season 2 on Netflix. We will update this post with more info as it is revealed, including when the show actually does get a second-season renewal (fingers crossed).
