Update 6/1/2018 at 1:50 P.M. EST: The all-screen, notch-less vivo phone that will launch on June 12 will not be called the vivo Apex. It will, in fact, be called the vivo Nex. We confirmed this info today with this invitation to attend the event in Shanghai:

The invite to the launch of the new vivo Next phone in Shanghai.

As described in the original article below, the vivo Apex was the name of the prototype device exhibited at Mobile World Congress 2018. It appears that the Apex moniker was just a codename for the prototype and that the vivo Nex is the official name.

All the other information below still applies for the launch of the new device.

Original Article: While Mobile World Congress 2018 certainly had a lot of cool things on display, nothing was quite as exciting as the vivo Apex: a concept phone that featured an all-screen display (with no notch), a pop-up selfie cam, and an underglass fingerprint sensor.

After a surge of excitement surrounding the device, vivo announced that it would release the phone to the public at some point in 2018. Now, we likely have a date for the official unveiling: June 12, 2018.

In addition to announcing the save-the-date image above, vivo also posted a new video ad to celebrate the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which prominently showcases the new smartphone:

Even with all this info, we still don’t know much about the device though, not even its name. At MWC, the device was called the vivo Apex, but it’s not clear if that will be its official name.

We also don’t know specs or the countries where the phone will be for sale. However, it’s likely the specs will be similar to the ones in the prototype and its also likely that the device will only sell in China, at least at first.

Confirmed: vivo Apex concept phone will get public release
News

For those of you just tuning in, the vivo Apex prototype shown at Mobile World Congress featured a 5.99-inch OLED panel, a Snapdragon 845, and a USB Type-C connector next to a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

In our hands-on testing of the phone, we found the underglass fingerprint sensor to be snappy and thought the pop-up selfie cam was a great idea, although a little clunky. However, the Apex was a prototype, so it’s highly likely that the device that will go into mass production will be even better.

With the backlash against the notch design concept still at a fever pitch, the vivo Apex is the first device to truly solve the problems surrounding an all-display smartphone. We’ll keep you posted as more information comes in surrounding the launch of this new vivo device.
