Hulu — June 3

Directed by Andrew Ahn from a sceenplay by Joel Kim Booster, Fire Island is a queer romcom inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and set on New York’s famous gay party destination Fire Island. A group of friends heads to Fire Island for their annual retreat, but a change of plans leads to conflict and potential new romance. Booster stars alongside Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, and Margaret Cho in one of the most exciting summer streaming movies.

Hustle

Netflix — June 10

Funnyman Adam Sandler now has a long history with Netflix. While his output has been somewhat hit or miss, Hustle is a solid new role for the SNL alum, produced by NBA superstar LeBron James. A down-on-his-luck basketball scout risks his career and reputation when he brings home a promising young player without his team’s approval.

Halftime

Netflix — June 14

Jennifer Lopez has been a pop culture phenomenon for decades, though she’s also faced enormous backlash, treated as a flash in the pan, a one-hit-wonder, and just a pretty face. This new Netflix original documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the artist’s life, celebrating her talent and work ethic while also addressing the toll that tabloid headlines can take.

Father of the Bride

HBO Max — June 16

A remake of the 1950 and 1991 films of the same name, Father of the Bride sees a man struggling to come to terms with his only daughter’s upcoming marriage. As he manages his own marital problems and other relationships, he has to find a way to be there for his beloved daughter. HBO Max’s Father of the Bride stars Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, Diego Boneta and Chloe Fineman.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

Hulu — June 17

A crowd-pleaser at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, British sex comedy Good Luck to You, Leo Grande rolled out in the U.S. as a Hulu original summer streaming movie in June. A retired widow seeking to spice up her life hires an attractive young sex worker, learning about herself in the process.

Cha Cha Real Smooth

Apple TV Plus — June 17

Receiving lots of critical praise when it premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, Cha Cha Real Smooth is now on Apple TV Plus as a summer streaming movie. Writer and director Cooper Raiff stars as a man who works as a host at Bar Mitzvahs. At one party, he meets a mother and strikes up a friendship with her and her autistic daughter.

Spiderhead

Netflix — June 17

Two prison inmates form a bond and resist their captors in this Netflix original film starring Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett. In the near future, a luxurious, state-of-the-art penitentiary offers inmates the chance to reduce their sentences. The catch is they have to participate in experimental studies using mind-altering drugs, overseen by an eccentric genius.

Jerry and Marge Go Large

Paramount Plus — June 17

Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening star in this summer streaming movie from Paramount Plus. The comedy is based on a HuffPost article. It tells the story of Jerry and Marge Selbee, who took advantage of a mathematical loophole to win the Massachusetts Lottery. With their newfound riches, they set out to revitalize their Michigan town.

Rise

Disney Plus — June 24

Disney’s biographical sports drama Rise is based on the true story of three young Nigerian-Greek brothers who emigrated to the U.S. as basketball stars in the NBA. The film follows their journey, along with their origins in Athens and their parents’ struggles to provide for the family and avoid deportation.

Persuasion

Netflix — July 15

Based on the novel by Jane Austen, Persuasion is a Netflix original film. It stars Dakota Johnson, Henry Golding, Cosmo Jarvis, Suki Waterhouse, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Richard E. Grant, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. Published after Austen’s death, Persuasion tells the story of an Englishwoman who encounters a man from her past, setting the stage for a second chance at love.

The Gray Man

Netflix — July 22

From the Russo brothers, directors of Avengers: Endgame, comes this A-list action movie released exclusively on Netflix as a summer streaming movie. A skilled CIA mercenary becomes a liability when he learns agency secrets. Now, he has to evade some of the world’s deadliest assassins. The Gray Man stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton.

Luck

Apple TV Plus — August 5

Sam Greenfield is the unluckiest person alive. But she has a chance to turn the tide when she learns about the Land of Luck, where she’ll work with magical creatures to possibly change her fortunes. This enchanting animated family film features the voices of Eva Noblezada, Simon Pegg, WHOOPi Goldberg, Flula Borg, Jane Fonda, and more.

Prey

Hulu — August 5

Fans of the Predator franchise will be thrilled to learn there’s a new entry. And it’s among the coolest summer streaming movies of 2022. A prequel to the four previous Predator films and two Alien vs. Predator films, Prey takes place in 1719. In it, a skilled Comanche warrior named Naru protects her tribe from a familiar alien Predator, on Earth to hunt humans.

The Princess

HBO Max — August 13

Offering an immersive look at the life of Princess Diana, this original HBO documentary explores the relationship of Diana and Charles, the Prince and Princess of Wales. The doc uses solely contemporaneous archival audio and video footage to offer a look at the tabloid-heavy coverage of Diana, including coverage of her seemingly fairytale wedding and tragic death.

Day Shift

Netflix — August 13

Starring Jamie Foxx, Day Shift sees a man struggling to put together enough money for his daughter’s tuition and braces. He may be able to scrape together all the cash in time, but it’ll be dangerous — his pool-cleaning business is a front for his real job. He’s a vampire hunter for hire in this Netflix original summer movie.

Orphan: First Kill

Paramount Plus — August 19

A prequel to the 2009 horror film, Paramount Plus original summer movie Orphan: First Kill follows Esther after she escapes from a psychiatric facility in Estonia. Travelling to America by posing as the missing daughter of a wealthy family, she is suddenly pitted against a mother who will do anything it takes to protect her family.

Me Time

Netflix — August 26

A devoted stay-at-home dad finds himself with some “me time” for the first time in years when his wife and kids are away. He uses the time to reconnect with an old friend, and the two find themselves getting up to increasingly outrageous hijinks. The Netflix summer movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Kevin Hart.
