TL;DR
  • Snap released its easy-to-use selfie drone on April 28, 2022.
  • Four months later, Snap has decided to discontinue the device.
  • Snap attributes the cancellation to reprioritizing the company’s resources.

Cancellations happen all the time in the tech world, but it’s always surprising when a product gets canceled shortly after its release. That’s exactly what happened with Snap and its selfie drone, the Pixy.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Snap held a question-and-answer session addressing company decisions. During the session, Snap Chief Executive, Evan Spiegel, told staff that the company would be halting the development of the $250 drone. Spiegel attributes the surprising decision as a part of a broader reprioritization of company resources.

Designed to be a drone that anyone could use, the Pixy is an approachable flying device that fits in the palm of your hand. With it, users can create content as the drone follows four preset flight paths. The drone is made to sync with the Snapchat app so users can easily share what they filmed.

This latest development seems to be a reaction spurred on by the recent economic downturn. However, Snap is far from the only tech company feeling the pain from market issues. In fact, tech giant Samsung recently readjusted its smartphone shipment target from 300 million to 260 million due to similar concerns.
