With the final season of The Last Kingdom now wrapped up at Netflix, fans of the British historical epic series may be looking for more shows like The Last Kingdom to watch next. A feature-length sequel titled Seven Kings Must Die is on the way at the streamer, but it may still be a while.
In The Last Kingdom, a Saxon raised by Vikings seeks to reclaim his birthright, having to choose between the people who raised him and his ancestral homeland. The series tackles conflicts between Christians and Danes as well as the prelude to the founding of England as a nation. The first two seasons aired on the BBC before the series was acquired by Netflix for seasons three to five.

9 shows like The Last Kingdom
Set in 9 CE, Barbarians follows three characters whose fates interweave during the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed Roman troops, halting the spread of the Roman Empire. Like The Last Kingdom, this German Netflix original series covers the bloody battles of history that led to the rise of the superpowers we know today.
Probably the most obvious choice among shows like The Last Kingdom, Vikings hits quite a few similar notes. The History Channel series (later acquired by Amazon Prime Video) follows a Viking warrior who travels to the western world in defiance of his chieftan, later becoming a Scandinavian king.
HBO’s prestige historical epic Rome follows two Roman soldiers as they live through and take part in the wars and political machinations that would give birth to the Roman Empire. The series features a huge cast of characters — many based on real historical figures like Gaius Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Gaius Octavian, and Cleopatra. Cancelled after just two seasons, it has nevertheless amassed a cult following.
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones may seem a little out there as a show like The Last Kingdom, being fantasy rather than historical fiction. Still, there are some strong parallels. Beyond the striking aesthetics and cinematic battle sequences, the shows also both feature ongoing power struggles, as various factions seek to rule over multiple peoples.
Troy: Fall of a City
This BBC and Netflix co-production chronicles the 10-year siege of Troy in the 13th century BCE. The war is seen from the perspective of young lovers Paris, a prince of Troy, and Helen of Sparta, whose illicit affair invited the wrath of the Greek king Menelaus.
An outlaw trapper, played by Jason Momoa, mounts a years-long campaign against the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly on fur in the 1700s in this gritty Canadian historical drama. As he fights against the company’s tyranny, he finds himself at odds with Lord Benton, who plans to restore the company’s power and stamp out his new foe.
Knightfall follows the story of a knight, years after the failed Crusades, as he becomes master of his order’s Paris temple. While dissuaded from further action by defeat and the King’s suppression of the Knights Templar, he nevertheless finds hope when new information about the Holy Grail comes to his attention.
A huge and ambitious international production for Netflix, Marco Polo follows the early years of the young explorer as he travelled with his father and uncle to what is now Beijing and the court of Kublai Khan. The series includes war, political intrigue, romance, and more, and it features global stars like Benedict Wong, Gabriel Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh.
If you want shows like The Last Kingdom for high-octane battle, you could do a lot worse than Spartacus on Starz. Based on the historical figure Spartacus, a gladiator who led a slave uprising against the Roman Empire, the series focuses on the hero’s early life, imagining his origins before the historical record.
