The Outsider

One of the most compelling elements of Shining Girls is the way its protagonist, Kirby, witnesses minor and major changes to her surroundings as her attacker changes parts of the past. In Travellers, people from the future transfer their consciousness into the bodies of people in the present in order to alter the march of time. In doing so, they find themselves having to maintain relationships and careers while posing as their new avatars.

Dark

A German Netflix original thriller series, Dark follows the disappearance of two children in a small German town. As the townsfolk come to terms with the sudden tragedy, long-buried truths begin to emerge, tracing their way back several decades and including some supernatural elements with some, er, dark implications.

The OA

Brit Marling stars in one of the best shows like Shining Girls you can stream. The OA sees a woman miraculously return after disappearing for seven years. Previously Blind and now suddenly able to see, she begins recruiting strangers to help her with a secret project. Armed with mysterious abilities, she seeks their help to unlock unknown mysteries of the universe.

Frequency

Inspired by the 2000 film of the same name, Frequency follows an NYPD officer who learns she can communicate with her dead father in 1996 via his old ham radio. As she works to warn him of danger and save his life from what killed him in her past, she begins to change her present and has to face the reality that the butterfly effect may lead to unintended consequences.

Tell Me Your Secrets

What makes a monster? That’s one of the central questions posed by Amazon Prime Video’s Tell Me Your Secrets. Three people’s lives collide in this dark thriller. One is a mother desperately searching for her missing daughter. One is a predator, recently released from prison and trying to lead a good life in the face of disturbing temptation. And one is a woman starting her life over after participating in a heinous act. But no one is quite what they seem, and perception is everything in this tense drama.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

It’s not horror or a thriller — despite a few plot points with darkly bizarre implications — but The Time Traveler’s Wife is a show like Shining Girls in at least one important way: its treatment of time travel. Based on the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger, the HBO Max series tells the story of a couple, Clare and Henry, as their relationship and marriage develops over the years. Their relationship is complicated, however, by a genetic condition that makes Henry travel back and forth through time.

Severance

Another Apple TV Plus show like Shining Girls, Severance similarly blurs the lines between reality and the impossible. A group of employees working for a mysterious company willingly undergo a procedure that separates their work memories from their personal memories. That peculiar work/life balance is threatened when one employee is visited by a colleague who remembers his work. Now, the hard break between work and home lives is threatened and the company’s true motives are slowly revealing themselves as a simmering revolt develops inside.

Brand New Cherry Flavor

A horror show set in the 90s, like Shining Girls, Brand New Cherry Flavor is a dark and twisted look at the entertainment industry. A young filmmaker heads to LA looking for her big break. Once there, a hotshot producer takes advantage of her, sending her down a surreal rabbit hole of witchcraft, curses, and bloody revenge. The Netflix miniseries didn’t quite get the love it deserved, and it’s worth checking out.
