TL;DR
  • In an industry first, Samsung has revealed LPDDR5X DRAM.
  • This will be the next step for smartphone RAM with faster speeds and lower power consumption.
  • We probably won’t see this RAM in smartphones for a while, however, with a possibility of it landing in the Galaxy S22 series.

Way back in 2018, Samsung announced the first LPDDR5 DRAM. This type of RAM has appeared in a ton of its higher-end phones, including this year’s Samsung Galaxy S21 series.

Today, Samsung is announcing the next step for smartphone RAM. In a press release, the company revealed the industry’s first LPDDR5X DRAM. Eventually, this new type of RAM will appear in high-end smartphones from Samsung as well as other OEMs.

According to Samsung, the LPDDR5X DRAM features 1.3x processing speeds when compared to LPDDR5 DRAM. The company also contends it consumes 20% less power. This should help make smartphones faster while putting less strain on the battery.

However, Samsung isn’t just thinking about smartphones here. DRAM appears in all manners of products, and Samsung hopes it will have a positive effect on everything from laptops to servers to cars.

The LPDDR5X DRAM is based on a 14nm structure, which stands in contrast to the 10nm structure of the LPDDR5.

It’s very possible we could see this new RAM appear in Samsung’s next flagship series: the Samsung Galaxy S22 family. We’ll need to wait and see how that pans out, but it seems logical for that phone series to carry the latest and greatest when it comes to Samsung tech.
