TL;DR
  • Samsung may not equip the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with 45W charging.
  • The upcoming Galaxy clamshell may still get a charging upgrade.
  • China’s consumer safety authority has certified the two phones confirming their charging speeds.

Information about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 has consistently leaked over the last few weeks. It now appears that a recent Chinese certification has confirmed the charging speed of the phones.

According to a 3C database listing, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 will feature 25W charging. While last year’s Z Fold 3 also came with the same charging speed, it’s an upgrade for Samsung’s flip phone that currently features 15W charging. However, fans of the more expensive Fold series may be disappointed. They may have expected the company to upgrade the device with its latest charging tech.

If Samsung’s current pricing strategy remains unchanged, the Galaxy Fold 4 could be much more expensive than the reigning Galaxy S22 Ultra flagship. The Z Fold 3 came in at $1,799 compared to the $1,199 price tag of the S21 Ultra. We expect a similar price difference between the two Samsung flagships this year. So the new Fold skipping out on 45W charging could be viewed as a mistake on Samsung’s part. But is it really something you’ll miss?

25W charging vs. 45W charging

Samsung’s fastest charging option is not as great as the company makes it out to be. Our testing revealed that Samsung’s 45W charging on the Galaxy S22 Plus and Ultra is barely faster than its 25W charging solution.

“There isn’t much point in upgrading to the more powerful model if you’re only gaining six minutes when charging with the 45W plug versus the 25W one,” our own Robert Triggs noted in his article pitting Samsung’s 25W charging against 45W charging.

Meanwhile, the battery capacity of the two upcoming foldable phones has also leaked. The Galaxy Z Fold 4’s battery size might remain unchanged at 4,270mAh, while the Z Flip 4 may get a tiny 100mAh increase to reach 3,400mAh capacity.
