Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag 3 leaks in all its glory, with a Galaxy Watch-inspired design change

It’s been a while since Samsung released a Bluetooth tracker, with the Galaxy SmartTag 2 launching back in 2023. A leak this July made it clear that a successor is on the way. We’re now getting an up-close-and-personal look at the Galaxy SmartTag 3 well ahead of its launch.

The folks over at WinFuture have unearthed what appear to be official images of the Galaxy SmartTag 3, shown in White and Black colorways. At first glance, it’s a major departure from its predecessor, especially in terms of design. The lanyard hole is completely gone, as Samsung appears to be sticking with a squircle shape instead.

This design change was revealed in the late July leak we referenced above, so it’s not exactly a big surprise. However, Samsung also appears to have addressed one of our primary concerns with the updated design.

Removing the lanyard hole implied that customers would have to buy additional accessories to attach the tracker to common everyday items. However, WinFuture notes that Samsung may include a cover for the SmartTag 3 with a circular carabiner attached on top. This could be the company’s way of making up for removing the lanyard hole.

While it’s hard to tell from these images, the front portion of the tracker could also be the dedicated button for custom actions, as seen on the last-gen model.

Samsung will also offer additional SmartTag 3 accessories, including a bumper case and silicone and leather cases, although images of these items are unavailable. In the meantime, we’re getting a decent look at Spigen’s ComfortTag pet collar attachment for the Galaxy SmartTag 3, so you can know where your four-legged friends are at all times.

While the technical details for the Galaxy SmartTag 3 haven’t been revealed yet, a recent FCC filing confirms the use of UWB (ultra-wideband) to enable precise tracking of items near you. We’re not seeing any mention of Samsung including Bluetooth 6.0 in the tracker, which rumors have suggested in the past.

WinFuture claims the Galaxy SmartTag 3 could be priced at $29.99 per unit, while a four-pack will reportedly be more cost-effective at $99.99.

The updated Galaxy SmartTag 3 design suggests Samsung is taking cues from the Apple AirTag by keeping things simple. However, Samsung seems to be going for a squircle shape resembling the Galaxy Watch models, while the AirTag largely resembles a puck.

There’s currently no word on when the Galaxy SmartTag 3 will be available for purchase, but this extensive leak tells us it may not be far away.
