Although, knowing Samsung, it could issue another update a few months from now just for the fun of it.

TL;DR
  • One last surprise Samsung Galaxy S9 update just landed.
  • It brings the March 2022 security patch.
  • This should be the last update the phone receives.

Earlier this month, Samsung moved the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus to end-of-life status. This meant the most recent update for these devices was their last.

However, today, we see that a new Samsung Galaxy S9 update is rolling out (via Droid-Life). So far, this update appears to be just for the Verizon-branded models. It should eventually make its way around the world, though.

The builds are QP1A.190711.020.G960USQU9FVB2 and QP1A.190711.020.G965USQU9FVB2 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus respectively. Release notes say the builds come with the March 2022 security patch and some bug fixes.

Theoretically, this should be the final Samsung Galaxy S9 update. However, Samsung has continued updating EOL phones several times in the past. Recently, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 received a surprise update, for example.

Do understand, though, that the official word is that the Galaxy S9 series is no longer supported. If you’re still rocking one of these phones, this final update should be the sign you need that it’s time to upgrade. There are a lot of great Samsung phones to be had, or you could even jump brands. Either way, the Galaxy S9 is old hat and it will soon be time to move on if only for the sake of smartphone security.
