Could Galaxy S27 Ultra bring zoom camera upgrades? New leak has bad news

Two sources recently suggested that Samsung could bring a major change to the Galaxy S27 Ultra zoom cameras. However, a trusted leaker has now poured cold water on these claims.

Tipster phonefuturist claimed late last month that Samsung was testing a 50MP 4x sensor (1/1.9-inch) on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. This was echoed by fellow user GalaxyFlash2025, who claimed early this month that the S27 Ultra would ditch the 3x and 5x cameras in favor of a 4x 1/1.9-inch sensor. This 4x sensor would be larger than the S26 Ultra‘s 3x and 5x cameras.

Now, long-time leaker Ice Universe has disputed these assertions, claiming that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will indeed maintain the 5x 1/2.52-inch telephoto camera. Check out the screenshot below.

Ice didn’t mention the 3x camera this time, but the leaker and Korean outlet ETNews previously asserted that the S27 Ultra wouldn’t have a 3x shooter at all. If confirmed, Samsung would have to rely on crops from the 200MP main camera for 2x to 4x zoom.

Either way, it sounds like Samsung will offer the same old 5x camera. But it would be a shame if the company got rid of the 3x shooter altogether instead of upgrading the sensor. This focal length is ideal for portraits, while Samsung and others also offer macro capabilities via their 3x cameras. Then again, I’d argue that Samsung should actually switch to a 200MP 3x or 4x camera if it really wants to drop the dual-telephoto setup. This would offer a good focal length for portraits while also enabling high-quality cropped zoom.
