iFixit Galaxy Fold Teardown 1

The Galaxy Fold had its fair share of design flaws when Samsung announced it earlier this year. Since then, Samsung made some revisions to the device before it launched a couple of weeks ago. Now, thanks to a teardown by iFixit, we can see what exactly Samsung updated in the Galaxy Fold to make it more durable.

Some notable changes include a new metal layer to reinforce the display and some plastic, gaskets, and tape protecting the hinges from letting in debris. These are both welcome changes given the device’s initial flaws. The two biggest weaknesses of the original model were the delicate display and exposed hinge.

According to iFixit, the changes to the display make it “surprisingly rigid, even when separated from the chassis.” Dirt can still make its way into the device through the hinge, but Samsung’s revisions make it harder for debris to damage the screen.

Samsung also fixed the protective layer atop the display. At first, users were mistaking it for a standard screen protector and removing it. Since this caused permanent damage to the display, Samsung extended the layer all the way to the edge of the screen. This makes it less likely to be user removed.

We already learned about many of the changes at IFA 2019. What the iFixit Samsung Galaxy Fold teardown offers is an in-depth look at the details. It reiterates that no matter how delicate it is in some aspects, Samsung did a great job of making the device as durable as possible. Of course, JerryRigEverything proved that already, but now we have a detailed look exactly at how Samsung did it.
