Report: Samsung isn't bringing S-Pen to Galaxy Fold 2
- Samsung has reportedly decided against offering an S-Pen alongside the Galaxy Fold 2.
- The firm apparently ditched the feature due to concerns regarding the screen.
- A Samsung foldable with the S-Pen is now said to arrive in 2021 instead.
Samsung is widely expected to launch the Galaxy Fold 2 in August, and it was believed to offer S-Pen support too. Now, a new leak suggests that this isn’t the case anymore.
Korea-based website The Elec reports that Samsung has decided against offering the S-Pen on the Galaxy Fold 2, citing sources within the company. The manufacturer apparently nixed the feature as it wasn’t able to make ultra-thin glass capable of being folded and withstanding pressure from the S-Pen.
Samsung reportedly investigated several other options, including the use of polyimide films and making a thicker cover glass that’s thinner in the folding area. The sources said that none of these options were thought to be viable, and that a foldable with an S-Pen has been pushed back to 2021.
This isn’t really too surprising when you think about it. The Galaxy Z Flip contained a plastic layer above the ultra-thin glass that could be easily scratched. So if a similar solution is in play on the new foldable, then it seems like using a stylus would only invite more scratches and grooves.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 is rumored to launch alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series in August. So those on the hunt for a new stylus-toting phone will have another option at least.
Other notable Galaxy Fold 2 rumors include a bigger external screen with a waterdrop notch, a slightly bigger main screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a similar camera setup as the Galaxy S20 Plus.
