Samsung could be working on a follow-up to flippy Galaxy A80

Samsung rejuvenated its mid-range Galaxy A series back in 2019, and the Galaxy A80 was arguably the most interesting device back then. The smartphone packed a motorized flipping camera mechanism that brought to mind the OPPO N series, but was really unlike anything we’d seen before.

Now, Dutch website GalaxyClub reports that Samsung is working on a successor to the Galaxy A80, apparently called the Galaxy A82. Unfortunately there isn’t much to know about the device, bar the outlet saying it’ll have 5G connectivity. This wouldn’t be a surprise given that Samsung is launching devices like the Galaxy A32 5G.

Furthermore, the website says it “cannot say with certainty” whether the Samsung Galaxy A82 will have a flipping camera mechanism as well. So you might want to pick up a Zenfone 6 or Zenfone 7 instead if the Galaxy A80 successor is lacking the feature.

The Galaxy A80’s flipping camera system was originally developed as an alternative to the display notch, enabling a full-screen design and great selfies via the main cameras. But we’ve since seen the ZTE Axon 20 5G, being the first phone with an under-display selfie camera. So we wonder whether Samsung is investigating this approach for the new phone as well. Then again, selfies taken with the ZTE phone’s camera are a notable step down from traditional selfie cameras.

Otherwise, the Galaxy A80 also brought a Snapdragon 730 chipset, an OLED screen, and a 3,700mAh battery. We’d therefore expect the new phone to pack a Snapdragon 700 series or Exynos 1080 chipset, as well as a bigger battery due to 5G consuming more power.
