  • It’s believed Google has asked its partners to manufacture over seven million Pixel 6 series phones.
  • This would be roughly double the company’s smartphone shipments in 2020.

Google is scheduled to reveal its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro today, being the latest flagship phones from the Mountain View company. And it sounds like the company might have extremely high hopes for the new devices.

Google has asked its suppliers to make over seven million Pixel 6 series phones, Nikkei Asia reports, citing its own sources. The outlet claims that this is roughly double the tech giant’s smartphone shipments of 3.7 million units in 2020, pointing to IDC statistics.

It’s not like the company is producing more models than last year, either. The firm offered the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5 in 2020, while 2021 will see the Pixel 5a and two Pixel 6 series phones. On the other hand, Google was one of several companies affected by pandemic-related manufacturing woes last year.

Nikkei‘s sources also claim that Google has asked its supply partners to produce over five million Pixel 5a devices. This would also exceed Google’s reported shipments for 2020. However, it’s worth noting that the Pixel 5a only launched in Japan and the US. So it’s unclear whether this apparent request only applies to these two markets or if Google plans to launch the mid-ranger in more countries down the line.

The outlet adds that Google is specifically aiming to steal market share from Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi. All three brands have gained market share following HUAWEI’s US-induced slide.

Two sources also claimed that the company is working on a new PixelBook and that it’s developing processors for its Chromebooks.
