TL;DR
  • The latest Razer Phone update introduces HDR and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 in Netflix.
  • The update also introduces camera improvements, security patches, and more.
  • The Razer Phone update should be rolling out now.

The Razer Phone‘s latest update makes the gaming peripheral company’s debut smartphone that much better, thanks to the inclusion of HDR in Netflix and plenty more.

That first bit is not a surprise, since Razer announced its partnership with Netflix and HDR for the Netflix app a few weeks ago. In addition to the increased visual fidelity, the partnership introduces Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. This makes the Razer Phone the first smartphone to support both standards.

Android Central notes that the Netflix application for the Razer Phone is a customized one that is baked into the ROM. This means that this customized version of Netflix is exclusive to the Razer Phone.

Elsewhere, the update introduces fixes and improvements for the camera software. In our review, we noted that the phone delivered a terrible photography experience, thanks to a lack of optimization on Razer’s part.

Thankfully, the company has issued several updates over the last few months to improve the software experience. This update includes further tuning and image quality improvement, as well as a fix for an issue where some images might appear yellow.

Finally, the update brings the January security patch and fixes for the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. The upgraded security patch level is particularly good news since the Razer Phone has been stuck on the October security patch for months.

The 249 MB update is rolling out now.
