TL;DR
  • Live TV streaming service Philo launched its Android app today.
  • The app features five sections and generally has a clean layout.
  • Philo was founded in 2009 and launched its live TV streaming service in 2017.

Live TV streaming service Philo announced and launched today a native Android app, reported TechCrunch. The service is also available for iOS, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and the web.

The app features five navigation buttons: Home, Guide, Saved, Search, and Settings. The Home section includes lists of trending, recommended, and new and upcoming shows. The Guide section presents all available channels in a traditional grid layout, while the Saved section lets you save shows to watch later.

While watching a show, you can tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the controls. On the top left is the back button, with a Start Over button also on the left. There’s also a gigantic pause button in the middle, a scrubber at the bottom to get to a certain point in the show, and a cog button on the top left for more options.

Tapping the cog icon brings up four options: Save, Captions, More episodes, and More on channel.

If you’ve never heard of Philo, we don’t blame you — even though Philo was founded in 2009, live TV streaming didn’t launch until 2017. By then, services like YouTube TV, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and others were, and still are, competing for your wallet.

What makes Philo stand out from the crowd is the pricing — the service offers 58 channels for just $20 per month. Channels include A&E, AMC, Food Network, HGTV, Nickelodeon, Viceland, and many more. Even Sling TV’s cheapest option only offers 33 channels for $25 each month.

Here’s the catch: Philo doesn’t include sports channels with its package. That means no CBS, NBC, TNT, and ESPN. It also doesn’t include major news channels like CNN and Fox News, though you do get BBC World News, BBC America, and Cheddar.
