TL;DR
  • Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, wants to make a small Android phone.
  • He has a website detailing its ideal size (iPhone 13 Mini, basically) and the required specs.
  • Migicovsky is looking for at least 50,000 interested buyers so he can get the project moving.

In 2013, consumers started to get their hands on a new fancy gadget: a smartwatch. The watch came from a company called Pebble, which was founded by Eric Migicovsky. The Pebble didn’t last as long as it should have, but the entire smartwatch industry today owes it a huge debt.

Now, Migicovsky has a new goal: to create a small Android phone. In a blog post on his new website, he details his love of the form factor of the iPhone 13 Mini, shown above. However, he also discusses how much he loathes iOS and desires an Android equivalent of the 13 Mini. Since no Android manufacturer is making one, Migicovsky wants to do it himself.

We’ve given a summary of what Migicovsky is looking to do below. However, for his project to get off the ground, he needs at least 50,000 interested buyers. This is the number he says will be enough to convince a manufacturer to help him build and sell a small Android phone. If you’re interested in expressing support, there’s a form you can fill out.

Migicovsky’s small Android phone wishlist

Migicovsky has set his wishlist for the compact phone of his dreams into three categories: overall goal, must-have, and nice to have. Here’s how that looks:

Overall goal

  • Sub-6-inch display, matching size and design of iPhone 13 Mini
  • Great cameras
  • Stock Android OS

Must have

  • iPhone 13 Mini’s industrial design with consistent bezels around the entire display
  • 5.4-inch 1080p OLED display with 60Hz refresh rate
  • Cameras as good as Google Pixel 5
  • Stock Android
  • Snapdragon 8 (or other flagship processor equivalent)
  • 5G world phone
  • Punch hole front camera
  • At least two rear cameras (regular and wide angle)
  • 8GB of RAM
  • 128/256GB Storage
  • At least four hours of screen-on time
  • Unlockable bootloader

Nice to have

  • Rugged enough to not need a case
  • IP68-rated
  • Fingerprint sensor on power button
  • Hardware mute switch
  • Wireless charging
  • eSIM

Obviously, there are no guarantees the small Android phone Migicovsky creates would meet all these criteria and still stay within the $700-$800 price range he’s set for himself. However, you’ll never know if you don’t express your interest to buy, so make it happen.
