This Android 17 update brings the visual overhaul these flagship phones have been waiting for

Most Android brands bundle Google’s latest platform changes with their own features and visual upgrades. Xiaomi prefers to split the job. The company rolled out stable Android 17 to the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra in July while keeping them on last year’s HyperOS 3 interface. That update laid the foundation for the bigger changes coming with HyperOS 4, whose global beta program is now open.

In a community post, Xiaomi says it is initially recruiting owners of the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. The program supports Global and European (EEA) software builds, with applications available through Xiaomi Community > ME > Beta testing > Recruiting test.

More phones will join the program on September 17. The second wave includes the Xiaomi 17T Pro, Xiaomi 17T, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, and Xiaomi 15.

Since the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra already run Android 17, HyperOS 4 will focus on Xiaomi’s own design and feature upgrades rather than another underlying Android update. Material from the ongoing Chinese beta points to a new Soft Light Glass design with translucent, layered elements, as well as a redesigned lock screen and grouped notifications.

Soft Light Glass is a translucent, glass-morphism visual language designed for HyperOS 4. Instead of flat panels, system elements — such as lock screen numbers, widgets, notification cards, and control toggles — behave like dynamic layers of frosted or polished glass.

Xiaomi is also testing stacked home screen widgets, more flexible folder placement, and a revamped Fusion Device Center for managing phones, tablets, watches, computers, and smart home products. Recorder summaries, smarter voice notes, structured voice input, and translation are among the AI-powered features shown in China, although Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed which will reach global builds.

The company also claims that HyperOS 4 improves memory management, app launch speeds, long-term smoothness, and battery life. Those figures come from Xiaomi’s laboratory tests, so real-world gains will vary by device.

Joining the program doesn’t guarantee an immediate update, as Xiaomi will release beta builds when needed. Testers should also expect bugs, app compatibility problems, temporary overheating, and increased battery drain.

Returning to HyperOS 3 requires flashing the phone, which may erase its data. So we recommend backing up important files and, if possible, testing the beta on a secondary device.
