Tired of Spotify's mixes? Prompted Playlist lets you generate new ones on the fly

- Spotify’s new Prompted Playlist feature creates custom playlists from text prompts.
- The prompts can be as general or specific as you want.
- Prompted Playlist debuted in beta in New Zealand last month. It’s now expanding to the US and Canada.
Last month, Spotify introduced a feature it calls Prompted Playlist. Prompted Playlist uses AI to generate custom playlists based on your text input, which can be as broad or specific as you like. The feature has been exclusive to testers in New Zealand, but today, Spotify announced that Prompted Playlist is rolling out in beta in the US and Canada.
As described in a new blog post from Spotify, Prompted Playlist can make just about any playlist you could think up. You can ask for tracks from a specific genre or set of genres, tracks originally released within a specific span of time, tracks that Spotify has tagged as matching a certain mood — if you can describe a playlist, Prompted Playlist can make it.

You can get very granular with your prompt, Spotify explains. Today’s announcement includes some highly specific examples, like “mood-boosting indie-pop for getting ready to go out with friends including songs recently featured on hit competition and reality shows that fit my taste, along with songs I love but haven’t played this year.”
Requests don’t have to be quite so complex, though. Prompted Playlist can handle simpler prompts, too, in case you just want something like a list of tracks by artists you follow that you haven’t listened to recently. There are options to automatically refresh these playlists on a daily or weekly basis to keep things fresh. You can also edit the prompt any given Prompted Playlist is based on to fine-tune the mix, Spotify says.

Each included track comes with an AI-generated explanation as to why it ended up on your playlist. The platform will provide ready-made Prompted Playlist options, and there’s an Ideas button in the prompt interface in case you need a jumping off point.
Spotify’s had a complicated relationship with AI. The platform released its first AI-powered feature, a “DJ” that provides commentary between sets of tracks in a never-ending, algorithmically generated playlist, in 2023. Last year, the platform added the ability to make requests to guide its DJ feature. Spotify’s DJ has been well liked by some users — but an influx of AI-generated music across all platforms has been a thorn in the side of many streaming listeners. (It’s important to note here that while Prompted Playlist uses AI to compile its mixes, it does not generate the tracks that populate those lists.)
Prompted Playlist is rolling out to Premium subscribers in the US and Canada by the end of the month. You can make your own by tapping Create in the bottom right corner of the Spotify app, then tapping Prompted Playlist.
