OpenAI's answer to Meta Muse is a cute AI agent that never clocks out

ChatGPT began as a place you opened when you needed an answer. Then ChatGPT Work pushed things further, taking on long-running jobs across apps and files. OpenAI’s next step is to make the AI stick around even after you close the chat. At DevDay 2026, the company unveiled Dots, always-on personal agents that can keep working toward your goals in the background.

Powered by GPT-6 Astra, each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser and can connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s plugin ecosystem. OpenAI dresses them up as colorful, fuzzy characters you can name, but the idea goes deeper than a mascot. You can talk or message your Dot through ChatGPT, then reach the same agent through Slack or Microsoft Teams without losing context. Texting is coming soon.

The demos make that persistence easier to grasp. In one, a Dot notices its user is working through dinner, checks the calendar, and suggests two food-delivery options with prices. After the user picks one, the agent pulls up the order details and waits for approval before placing it. Other examples show Dots updating presentations when plans change, turning interview transcripts into social posts, rerunning research analysis, and fixing software bugs.

ChatGPT Work can already spend hours completing complex assignments once you hand them over, but Dots add ongoing background monitoring and cross-channel continuity. They also arrive just weeks after Meta launched Muse with similar ambitions to act across users’ apps and services.

That kind of autonomy makes permissions especially important. OpenAI says proactive background research uses read-only tools, while Custom Rules can require approval or block specific actions. Activity View lets you watch and redirect ongoing work, and sensitive jobs such as changing a password always stay with you.

Dots are rolling out gradually starting today, so access may take several days to reach everyone. ChatGPT Pro users can get Dots on web, mobile, and desktop in markets outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK. In contrast, Business Premium users can access them across all supported ChatGPT regions. Enterprise customers can also try the beta once a workspace admin enables it, though OpenAI is leaving the feature switched off by default.

For the next month, Dot usage won’t count toward eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise plan allowances, with plan-specific usage terms coming afterward.
