OnePlus might be making a rival to Apple's AirTag

It's just a name so far, but it hints at fresh competition with Apple.

TL;DR
  • OnePlus has filed for a “OnePlusTag” trademark.
  • This hints it might be developing an equivalent to Apple’s AirTag item tracker.
  • It’s not clear how this would stand out, or when it would arrive.

OnePlus isn’t shy about following Apple into some categories, and that might soon include item trackers. DroidMaze and Neowin have learned that OnePlus (through Beijing Intangible Technology) filed for a “OnePlusTag” trademark on May 18, hinting at possible development of a rival to Apple’s AirTag devices.

This is just a trademark, so there are no indications of how OnePlus would compete with AirTag features, when it might launch, or whether or not the company is making a product in the first place. The phone brand tends to reserve trademarks for names it ends up using, though, so this might not be just-in-case speculation.

OnePlus has a history of making accessories that don’t necessarily match Apple on features, but clearly undercut the American firm on price. The OnePlus Watch is much more affordable than the Apple Watch SE, for instance, even though it’s really more of a large-screen fitness device than a smartwatch. While a OnePlus equivalent to an AirTag wouldn’t necessarily include the ultra-wideband directional tracking or other luxuries of Apple’s model, it could cost considerably less while integrating tightly with OnePlus phones.

You’ll want to be patient as it is. OnePlus tends to release accessories in sync with new phones, and we wouldn’t count on any AirTag equivalent shipping alongside the upcoming Nord CE. You may be waiting months or more to track a lost bag or keys, assuming OnePlus presses forward in the first place.
