OnePlus 6T launched in India: Everything you need to know

The OnePlus 6T is a T iteration, and therefore doesn’t pack in massive hardware and software improvements from the OnePlus 6.

OnePlus 6T back

After yesterday’s unveil in the New York City, OnePlus today announced the launch of the new OnePlus 6T in India at a mega launch event in New Delhi. The mid-cycle refresh brings a few updates to what was already one of the best phones of 2018, the OnePlus 6.

Smaller notch

The OnePlus 6T sports a much smaller notch than the OnePlus 6 – it’s about 75 percent smaller, utilizing a design that’s popularly known as a teardrop notch. It allows OnePlus to cram in a larger 6.41-inch AMOLED display.

OnePlus has also improved the brightness on its displays for better viewing outdoors.

In-display fingerprint scanner

The OnePlus 6T display holds another big change – an embedded fingerprint scanner – while the rear fingerprint scanner has been removed.

OnePlus claims this is the fastest in-display reader in the industry with an unlock time of about .34 seconds. Typically, in-display scanners aren’t quite as fast as traditional fingerprint readers and it sounds like this will still be the case.

No headphone jack

The headphone jack is gone, yes. OnePlus says this allowed them to increase the size of the resonance chamber on its internal speakers, as well as make room for a few other components without having to increase the phone size much.

Whether you buy this argument or not is up to you, but it’s a trend that’s becoming increasingly common and so not much of a surprise.

Top-of-the-line specifications

Like the OnePlus 6, the OnePlus 6T is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and — depending on the model — has 6GB or 8GB of RAM. OnePlus is ditching the 64GB storage size and will only offer the phone with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

OnePlus has offered 3,300mAh battery since the OnePlus 5, so it was overdue an upgrade here. The OnePlus 6T packs a 3,700mAh battery that should easily make it through a day or more since the OnePlus 6 already has had pretty decent battery life.

Safety information

The camera on the OnePlus 6T remains pretty much the same. It offers 16MP and 20MP f/1.7 sensors that perform very similarly to the OnePlus 6. The main 16MP shooter has OIS and EIS.

The real change comes down to software. OnePlus is introducing improved HDR and portrait modes, a new Studio Lighting mode that recognize faces and adjust lighting to simulate professional lighting, and a new Nightscape mode. The Nightscape mode is designed to provide improved clarity and less noise in low-light conditions.

The OnePlus 6 has already received Android Pie update, but the OnePlus 6T features the latest OxygenOS updates as well. This includes improved navigation gestures and an updated Gaming mode with floating icons that make it easy to see your notifications at a glance.

There’s also a new Smart Boost mode that stores app data in memory to improve cold boot times. This should translate to much faster app launch times, with OnePlus claiming you could see an improvement in the range of five to twenty percent — depending on the app.

Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus 6T will be available in two color variants – Midnight Black and Mirror Black – in three memory configurations and will retail at 37,999 rupees ($517) for 6/128 GB, 41,999 rupees ($571) for 8/128 GB, and 45,999 rupees ($626) for the 8/256 GB variant. The devices will be available in a preview sale on and starting November 1 and on an open sale on,, Croma and Reliance Digital stores along with OnePlus exclusive offline stores, starting November 3.

The company also unveiled its new Type-C Bullets earphones in Matte Black that will retail at 1,490 rupees.

The OnePlus 6T is a T iteration, and therefore doesn’t pack in massive hardware and software improvements from the OnePlus 6 announced just five months ago. What do you think of the pricing of the new OnePlus 6T and would you like to pick one up?
