Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of OnePlus, today announced on Twitter that the kernel source code for the OnePlus 2 is now available for download from GitHub. Even though this news won’t directly benefit everyday users of the handset, making the source code available for public download will allow developers to begin creating custom ROMs for the device.

The OnePlus 2 runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box and comes pre-loaded with OnePlus’ in-house Oxygen OS software overlay. The company’s first handset, the OnePlus One, came with Cyanogen OS pre-installed. After a very public falling out between OnePlus and Cyanogen took place, OnePlus decided to create its own software replacement soon after.

This news comes just days after the OnePlus 2 received its first OTA update, which included a patch to help deal with the well-known Stagefright security exploit, a handful of bug fixes, and a bump up to Oxygen OS version 2.1.
