Emoji on an Android phone.
TL;DR
  • Unicode has released a list of 61 emoji candidates that could be added in early 2020.
  • The organization also teased several emoji that would be released in 2020.
  • Current emoji contenders for 2020 include a ninja, magic wand, a dodo bird, and more.

Every year the Unicode Consortium works to bring new and interesting emoji to Unicode so that people on smartphones and computers can send each other animated characters. While the organization has shortlisted 61 new characters to be released in 2019, the teased emoji for 2020 which includes a ninja and a dodo bird are what have us excited.

Over the last several years, Unicode has worked to bring more inclusive emoji to people’s smart devices. The proposed items for Unicode 12.0 — which is to be released in Q1 of 2019 — continues this trend. In it, we see emojis for an ear with a hearing aid, mechanical legs and arms, a sari, a service dog, and much more.

In addition to the new emojis, a Unicode technical committee changed some of the names and order of several characters and added 55 combinations for the emoji that features a couple holding hands. The new sequences for the emoji allow for more customization for the couple’s race and gender.

2020 Emoji Canidates Ninja

But the emoji that you see above are provisional candidates for 2020. These include a ninja, mammoth, feather, military helmet, dodo, screwdriver, saw, and a magic wand. Between now and March of 2019, a Unicode emoji subcommittee will collect and assess additional emoji ideas. Those that are selected will then go through further vetting and might make their way to your phone in 2020.

What are your thoughts on the emoji being released in 2019? Are there any other emoji that you would like to see added to Unicode in 2020 other than a ninja?
