TL;DR
  • The new list of Emoji icons for 2018 has been revealed, and it includes 161 new characters.
  • Many of the characters are simple variations on one design, but with different skin tones, genders, and hairstyles.
  • The new icons will appear on phones sometime in August or September of this year.

Emojis have become so ubiquitous in such a short period of time, it’s hard to imagine that there are things that still don’t have representation in the Emoji library. But in 2018 there are 161 new Emojis coming to help you express yourself in picture form.

This year’s Emoji update heavily emphasizes race and gender options, with the bulk of the 161 new characters being variations on one particular concept. For example, the new supervillain Emoji comes in both a male and female design, and within those you can break them down into different skin tones.

There are also different simple faces to choose from, allowing you to select the gender, skin tone, and even hairstyle that matches yourself or the person you are talking about in Emoji form.

That may seem underwhelming, but don’t worry, there are still plenty of new fun options to play with. There’s a new smiling face with three hearts around it, to emphasize your feelings of love even more than the smiley face with two heart eyes. The hot face and cold face Emojis, shown in the photo above, will help you more easily complain about the weather. There’s also a new “pleading” smiley face that I suppose you would use in a conversation with someone on how you wish they would stop using Emojis for everything.

In the non-human world, there’s a whole slew of new animal Emoji choices, including a llama, kangaroo, swan, lobster, mosquito, and even a microbe. And for people of Chinese descent celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, there’s now a mooncake Emoji!

You can see the full list of new Emoji’s here. The new Emojis will start showing up on mobile phones around August or September this year.

And did you know that anyone can make suggestions for new Emojis to appear in future releases? Just follow the instructions on this site, and you can do just that. But please, keep it clean. We already have the peach and eggplant Emojis.
