TL;DR
  • The new Night Sight camera feature Google unveiled at its recent hardware event is now unofficially available for all Pixel devices.
  • You can get the new feature via an unofficial port of the Google Camera app.
  • Eventually, Night Sight will roll out to all Pixel devices via the official app, but you can give it a try now!

Google’s line of Pixel smartphones has always been highly regarded for its photography capabilities. As such, it wasn’t much of a surprise Google devoted a substantial block of its hardware launch for the Google Pixel 3 to different camera tricks coming to the highly-anticipated smartphone.

One of those features is called Night Sight. Using Night Sight, a Pixel owner can shoot a long-exposure photo at night or in a dark area and Google’s software will magically make the shot look much better.

Check out some camera samples below. The picture on the left is the photo taken with just HDR+ on, and the right is the same shot with Night Sight:

Night Sight didn’t ship with the Google Pixel 3 — it will instead come through a future software update to the device. However, modders over at XDA Developers figured out a simple way to bring Night Sight to any Pixel device, including the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, and Pixel 3 XL.

To get Night Sight, you need to download a slightly-modified version of the Google Camera app which is available at AndroidFileHost. You can click here to get it or click the button at the bottom of the article.

To be clear, this is a customized application and will register on your Pixel device as a new app. That means after installing this app you’ll have two Google Camera apps on your phone: the official version and this modified version.

Eventually, Night Sight will roll out to Pixel devices within the official Camera app. Keep in mind that since this mod is based on a leaked version of the software, the results you get from Night Sight using this custom app might be different from the final version.
