Generative AI is everywhere, whether it’s used as a cornerstone of a service, used to build apps, or employed to boost functionality within them. But with so many new products appearing all the time, which ones are worth checking out?

If it looks like a duck…

One of the biggest issues with generative AI, at least for general internet users, is telling the real from the generated. The capabilities of these models have advanced to the point where this task has become ridiculously tough, even for the knowledgeable eye. Worse still, given the rapid speed of development, there’s no hope that it’ll get any easier in the future.

So how do we identify AI-generated images from real captures or human-created content? A new app, called C2PA Verify, hopes to lend users a hand. Available on Android, the app can read C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) credentials that help viewers track an image’s origins and editing history.

This often lengthy log is simplified by the app, letting you view the signer, the image’s creator, a timeline of the image’s life, and raw data if you so desire. There’s one issue with C2PA credentials: they can be erased from the image. This means the app cannot determine whether an image is AI-generated or real if this data is scrubbed.

Nevertheless, I still believe that C2PA Verify is a useful tool to have on one’s device. It’s open source, free to use, and comes from Dark Rock Studios, the developer of another privacy app I lean on daily, SnapSafe.

Retirement Planner

Given the dim global economic outlook, it’s pretty daunting to plan your finances right now. Even if you contribute to a retirement plan, there are so many unknowns that it’s difficult to project if you’re saving enough without a dedicated tool. 

Recently, I stumbled across a web app vibecoded with Claude Opus 4.5 that makes this process much simpler. Simply called Retirement Planner, it was written to ease users into the planning process and help them visualize their projected wealth based on various custom inputs.

It calculates particulars such as the total portfolio value in the future (and the value adjusted for inflation), the post-retirement drawdown rate, and total taxes. It offers a really good, holistic glimpse into whether your current retirement strategy will be fruitful.

The tool is available for US and Canadian citizens using their respective default economic values, projections, and currencies.

Memoria

Memoria is an Android gallery app that uses offline AI to power its natural language search smarts. Yes, Google Photos offers a similar superpower, but with Memoria, all the searches and data remain on-device.

The app uses Apple’s MobileCLIP-S0 model to crunch the queries and search images, and no internet connection is required for it to function. This means Memoria’s installation size is well over 250MB.

Nevertheless, with this power, users can initiate a text-based search or one using a related image. I’ve found the app particularly useful for combing through wallpapers.

Memoria is open source and free to use. Best of all, it’s a brilliant showcase of how AI can simplify more laborious aspects of digital life.
