Motorola’s first Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 phone is hard to ignore

Motorola just gave us the first proper look at its upcoming Signature device. For reference, the original Motorola Signature didn’t make it to the US when it launched earlier this year. Its successor, however, has just been confirmed, and Motorola is clearly aiming high.

At the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, the tech giant unveiled the Motorola Signature 27. This is the first smartphone announced with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset.

For starters, the company clearly isn’t playing it safe with the Signature 27’s rear design. The rear camera system has a clustered look to it, and depending on how you feel about tightly grouped holes and circles, the device could give you mild trypophobia.

The device has several individual circular openings across the top of the rear cover, with the camera spread across, instead of a more traditional design where cameras stay within a compact island. Ignoring the design for a second, there’s some serious ambition behind the busy setup.

The phone boasts a 50MP Sony LYTIA 910 main sensor, in addition to a 200MP periscope telephoto camera. That’s comparable to camera-focused flagships like the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.

Device images make it clear that the Signature 27 will feature at least two more cameras, likely a telephoto and an ultrawide, complete with a circular cutout for the flash as well. These camera specs were not shared, though we’re expecting 50MP sensors as well.

Cooling, audio, and support

What the company did highlight, however, was the Signature 27’s cooling system. According to Motorola, the upcoming device will feature an “ArcticMesh” cooling system. This system reportedly combines a diamond-infused thermal gel, liquid metal, copper mesh, and a 3D vapor chamber to manage heat. This is important, considering the expected raw power of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, alongside the AI, gaming, and video recording workloads Motorola wants the phone to be able to handle.

The Signature 27’s ability to sustain performance during extended use and its general cooling capabilities are things we’ll ultimately have to test for ourselves.

In addition to imaging, the phone is aiming to set a high standard for audio, too. Motorola’s recent multi-year partnership with Bang & Olufsen (B&O) is manifesting in the form of audio by B&O on the Signature 27. This makes it the first Motorola smartphone to carry the branding. The company didn’t go into specifics, though it clearly wants you to notice the partnership. Just take a look at the device below, and you’ll see.

Elsewhere, the Signature 27 will offer seven years of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. This matches update policies set by the likes of Google and Samsung.

The company plans to offer the upcoming device in two finishes. Yes, two finishes, not just two colorways. There’s PANTONE Coal Smoke and PANTONE Capulet Green.

Motorola says the former draws inspiration from “automotive engineering and performance wear,” featuring a woven-texture rear that enhances grip and durability. The latter draws inspiration from “premium fashion and interior design,” featuring a brushed finish.

The Signature 27 is expected to come to markets worldwide sometime this year. Motorola said it would have more to share closer to the launch.
