TL;DR
  • The Motorola Defy is now official.
  • Motorola’s latest rugged phone is made by Bullitt Group, the company behind CAT smartphones.
  • It sports a toughened shell, Gorilla Glass Victus, and an IP68 rating.

Motorola announced plans to jump into the rugged smartphone market back in February. Now, we’re seeing the first fruits of its partnership with device maker Bullitt Group. The company has revealed (h/t 9to5Google) the Motorola Defy, its new rugged mid-range smartphone.

Taking the name from a classic Moto device, the Defy packs a drop-resistant shell with a MIL-STD-810H rating and IP68 water and dust resistance. It also packs a textured rubber-like finish at the rear, a 6.5-inch HD+ screen with Gorilla Glass Victus up front, and a programmable button on its side.

Customary Motorola design touches are present on the phone, too. A square triple rear camera array (48MP+2MP+2MP) is reminiscent of the Moto G Power. Below it, a Motorola logo is placed over a capacitive fingerprint sensor.

Internally, the Motorola Defy is more reserved than its appearance would suggest. It uses a Snapdragon 662 SoC mated to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. Powering the lot is a 5,000mAh battery which tops up through 20W wired charging.

There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack, NFC support, detachable lanyard, and an 8MP selfie camera.

The phone also runs on Android 10 out of the box, but Bullitt promises an update to Android 11 and security updates for two years.

Motorola Defy: Price and availability

The Motorola Defy starts at €329 (~$399) in Europe. It will also be available in Latin America in the coming weeks. Colorways include “Forged Green” and black.
