What is The Mighty Ducks, anyway?

The first movie in The Mighty Ducks trilogy was released in theaters in 1992. Emilio Estevez starred as Gordon Bombay, a former kid hockey player who is now a high-powered attorney in Minneapolis. After he gets arrested for drunk driving, he is sentenced to community service. As a result, Bombay is forced to coach a kids hockey team, which has never been competitive in their local league. With Bombay’s help, the team, who gets renamed to the Ducks, starts actually winning games. In the end, they win the league’s championship. The movie was a big hit for Disney and spawned two sequels: D2: The Mighty Ducks in 1994 and D3: The Mighty Ducks in 1996. You can watch all three movies now on Disney Plus.

Perhaps the oddest spin-off of the movie series was an actual NHL team. Disney owned and launched The Mighty Ducks team in Anaheim, California in 1993. The company later sold off the team in 2005. However, the current owners still call the team The Anaheim Ducks.

The new show is called The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. Set once again in Minneapolis, the Ducks team has actually evolved to become the top team in the local kids league for the past decade. However, a mother for one of the players gets upset when her son is cut from The Mighty Ducks. She feels that the Ducks are getting too serious and that kids should just play sports for fun. She helps to organize and coach a new hockey team for kids who are not natural athletes. She also recruits a now-retired Bombay to help the team.

In the sixth episode of the series, characters from all three Mighty Ducks feature films returned to the ice. They included Elden Henson as Fulton, Matt Doherty as Averman, Vinny La Russo as Adam Banks, Marguerite Moreau as Connie, Garret Henson as Guy, and Justin Wong as Kenny Wu. Two notable actors from previous films, Joshua Jackson (Charlie), and Kenan Thompson (Russ “Knuckle Puck” Tyler) won’t be in the first season due to scheduling conflicts. However, Estevez is quoted in an Entertainment Weekly article as saying, “If there is a season 2 and 3, we are holding the door open for any and all of the Ducks from the original films to return,”
