Lenovo Smart Clock Essential owners are waking up to missing weather

Lenovo’s little bedside clocks have spent years quietly doing the basics well: waking people up, answering questions, controlling smart-home devices, and showing the weather at a glance. That usefulness has survived Google’s messy transition from Assistant to Gemini, but earlier this year, owners of the standard Smart Clock lost convenient touchscreen controls for their smart lights. And now, some Lenovo Smart Clock Essential users are missing another deceptively useful feature: the weather display.

Affected clocks no longer show the weather icon or outdoor temperature, leaving only the time. Before-and-after photos show the complete time, weather, and temperature readout reduced to just the clock.

The problem seems to have first surfaced in early August, per Reddit reports. According to the original poster, the weather information vanished even though the clock remained online and responsive. Rebooting did not help. The readout returned several hours later, suggesting a temporary glitch, but the relief didn’t last. On September 13, the owner updated the post to say the weather info had disappeared again.

What initially seemed like a limited problem now appears to be spreading. A newer Reddit thread now includes fresh reports from the UK, Australia, and Poland. One commenter said both their Lenovo and Insignia clocks lost the temperature display, while another with two Lenovo clocks said only one is affected.

That inconsistent behavior points more toward a server-side bug or staggered backend change than failed display hardware, although neither Google nor Lenovo has yet confirmed the cause. Several owners associate the issue with Google Home’s switch to Gemini, but that theory remains circumstantial. Some had used Gemini for months before the weather vanished, but not every Gemini-enabled clock is affected.

Unfortunately, owners haven’t found a dependable workaround. Factory resets, reboots, settings changes, and removing and re-adding the clock produce mixed results. The clock can still read the forecast aloud, so Assistant or Gemini remains functional. What’s missing is the quick, silent glance that made the feature so useful beside the bed.

For now, owners can only submit feedback (Google Home app > Lenovo Smart Clock Essential > Settings > 3-dots menu > Feedback) and wait to see if the weather returns on its own.
