Not impressed with the Galaxy Note 9? Neither is HUAWEI.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
TL;DR
  • HUAWEI has posted a tweet calling the P20 Pro and its next project, expected to be the Mate 20 series, “real upgrades.”
  • The tweet is almost certainly a jab at the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and its incremental improvements.

Unless you’ve been avoiding everyone and everything for the last 24 hours you’ve probably heard that Samsung has revealed its next flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 9, at an event in New York City.

It turns out the team at Huawei was definitely watching the “Unpacked” showcase, as today the Chinese giant has took to Twitter to unleash a not-so-subtle jab at its South Korean rival and the Note 9’s apparent lack of innovation.

In a tweet (below) showing off the HUAWEI P20 Pro‘s improvements over the P10 series, namely the triple camera, 40MP lens, 5x zoom, HUAWEI boasted that it is more interested in “real upgrades that will make a difference everyday.”

This was accompanied with a photo of the P10 Plus next to the P20 Pro and the even more pointed strapline: “This is called a real generation upgrade.”

We took a leap when we launched the #HuaweiP20Pro, we’re all about real upgrades that will make a difference everyday like a triple lens camera with 40mp, 5x zoom and much more. Imagine what will come next… pic.twitter.com/AjUS86YHyK

While HUAWEI doesn’t call out Samsung by name, it’s pretty clear that the Note 9 is the target here. Even with notable improvements to the S Pen and welcome battery and RAM increases, it’s hard to shake the feeling that the Note 9 is much more than an incrementally improved Note 8 with a few trimmings from the Galaxy S9/S9 Plus.

Whether you’re happy with the Note 9 or not, HUAWEI has apparently smelt blood in the water and is looking to capitalize. In the tweet, HUAWEI hints that whatever it releases next will be another big step forward for the brand. With the Mate 20 series rumored to be on the horizon, we’ll have to wait and see if HUAWEI can deliver on that promise.
