How to cancel your Grubhub order

You'll need to act fast.

It happens sometimes — you pull the trigger on a meal order but decide against it a few minutes later. So how does Grubhub handle cancellation requests?


You can cancel a Grubhub order by selecting it in the app's Orders tab, then choosing Help > Cancel order. You'll be asked for a reason, and have to hit Chat With Us to complete the cancellation with an agent. Normally, orders will only be cancelled if you do it before a restaurant starts making your food.


Can you cancel a Grubhub order?

Yes, you can, but only before a restaurant begins preparing your order. That’s a relatively short window, since the aim of services like Grubhub is to have your food ready as soon as possible.

How to cancel your Grubhub order

There are a few ways to do it. If you want to attempt it in-app:

  • Open the Grubhub app and select the Orders tab.
  • Tap your current order.
  • Tap the corner Help button, then Cancel order.
  • Pick a reason for canceling, then Chat With Us.
  • You’ll have to chat with an agent, who will explain whether you’re still able to cancel and/or get a refund.

The process is similar on Grubhub’s website, except that you go to Account (the person icon) > Help to get assistance with recent orders.

If the above methods are taking too long, an alternate option may be to call the restaurant you ordered from and cancel directly. That’s a little risky, since of course they need to link you with your order, and that cancellation has to propagate backwards to Grubhub.

Does Grubhub give refunds?

Yes. If you cancel for any reason before a restaurant begins making your food, you should expect a refund in 3 to 5 business days.

Otherwise, you probably won’t get a refund unless there was something wrong with your order. Here are some valid reasons according to Grubhub:

  • Wrong food temperature
  • Serious quality issues (undercooked, overcooked, unusually bad taste, etc.)
  • Food poisoning
  • Allergic content
  • Objects in the food
  • Special instructions weren’t followed
  • Order is missing items or otherwise incorrect
  • Order never arrived
  • Restaurant doesn’t answer Grubhub on the phone when you try to cancel a late order or update your delivery address (Grubhub will handle this itself)
