Juggling multiple cards? Google Wallet's new layout could make life much easier

- The expanded card view appears to open separately from the main Wallet homepage, helping keep transit cards, passes, and loyalty cards easily accessible.

Soon after rolling out support for adding physical transit cards and balances to Google Wallet, Google is refreshing the app in one of the most important areas. The tech giant seems to be experimenting with how Google Wallet displays saved payment cards, and we’re all for it.
Google Wallet’s card list could soon display all your debit and credit cards in a vertical layout, similar to Apple’s implementation. The development was first highlighted on X, with the redesign rolling out in phases (via 9to5Google).
Google Wallet’s current design, for reference, places your saved payment cards in a horizontally swipeable carousel. For those with multiple cards, this design is a bit unfriendly. Reaching a card deep in the carousel requires repeated swipes, and it’s something that would only get more tedious as you add more payment methods.
With the latest redesign, Google Wallet would stack cards in a vertical layout, with all payment cards visible on the screen. Instead of swiping to reach the desired card, you simply tap it. On Apple Wallet, this action selects the desired card, brings it to the top, and preps it to be used for a payment. It is very likely that Google’s redesign works similarly. This is also a big quality-of-life change for one-handed use.
The “X” symbol seen in the screenshot below also suggests that the stacked card view will open as a separate and expanded overlay from a smaller UI element on the homepage. This should prevent the homepage from being too crowded, all while keeping transit cards, passes, loyalty cards, and more accessible.
I’m running the latest Google Wallet version but don’t yet have access to the new UI to test out exactly how it works. However, it does look like users will have the option to reorder cards and set a default one.
The redesign appears to be rolling out to international users first. A Reddit thread highlighting the change includes reports from users in Japan and the Dominican Republic. Generally, availability seems to be fairly limited as of right now. Either Google is rolling out the redesign in phases, or it is testing the interface with a small group before deciding whether to push it out more broadly.
