TL;DR
  • Google Translate on the web now has a tab for images.
  • Once you upload a picture, the tool will translate the words in the photo to your desired language.
  • The tool uses the same technology as the AR Translate feature for Google Lens.

Google has made a helpful change to Google Translate. The web version of the tool can now convert text from images into your desired language.

When you go to the Google Translate website, you’ll see a row of tabs near the top of the page. If you have used the tool before, you may notice that there’s a new tab among the group. This new tab is the Images tab.

With this new feature, users will be able to translate words that appear in photos or screenshots. To use it, all you have to do is upload an image from your phone or computer. Once uploaded, the tool should seamlessly detect the language in the image and translate it to whatever language you have set for your default. There also appear to be over 130 languages to choose from.

In addition to translating, the tool allows you to see a side-by-side comparison if you click on the “Show original” toggle. You can also download the translated image or copy the text.

This new Google Translate for the web feature uses the same generative adversarial networks (GAN) found in the AR Translate for Google Lens. By using this technology, it allows the tool to look like it has seamlessly replaced the original text instead of superimposing the translation on top of the original text.

If you’re thinking Google Lens has been able to do this for a while, you would be right. However, this was only the case for mobile. Now browser users can take advantage of this feature too.
