Google is working on a big Live Translate upgrade for Android XR

- Google Translate could introduce big Live Translate updates for the Android XR platform.
- We have exclusively uncovered traces of a “Listening area” feature that will offer extensive control over the microphones.
- If implemented, users will be able to switch between Front-only and Surrounding-area mic modes for Live Translate on Android XR.
While there’s only one Android XR device on the market right now, namely the Samsung Galaxy XR, there are more on the way. Google has already built deep integrations for its core apps like Google Maps, Photos, Gboard, and the Play Store. Last year, we uncovered development on Live Translate for Google’s extended reality platform. We can now exclusively reveal a potential feature addition for the Live Translate experience on Android XR.

Digging into version 10.32.66 of the Google Translate app for Android, we’re seeing references to a new “Listening area” setting for Live Translate on Android XR.

Additional lines of code we’ve spotted suggest that the Listening area menu will reveal two options:
- Front only (Translate speech directly in front of you)
- Surrounding area (Translate all speech in the nearby area)
The accompanying descriptions explain how both modes work, with Surrounding-area potentially tapping into the full array of microphones on Android XR devices. The Front-only option seems tailored for one-on-one conversations. This particular Live Translate mode could also help filter out any background noise and focus on the person in front of you.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any visuals of these functions yet, as we’ve only seen them mentioned in the code strings. Still, developments like these suggest that Google is continually working to improve existing functionality before Android XR hardware is more widely available.
Currently, the Galaxy XR is the only commercially available Android XR device. Upcoming smart glasses from brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, among others, will change that to some extent.
