Leaked specs suggest Google's second-gen Tensor could be significant step up

Last year, Google launched its first-ever mobile processor, known as Tensor, which landed in the Google Pixel 6 series. While the chip wasn’t as powerful as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, it did have some distinct advantages that made it pretty useful when it comes to machine learning and AI tricks.

With the Google Pixel 7 series confirmed along with a new processor upgrade to Google Tensor 2, it’s time for the leaks to begin. Today, via DDaily.co.kr, we found a report that suggests Samsung has started production of the second-gen Tensor chip using a 4nm process.

As a reminder, Samsung built the first Tensor chip on a 5nm process. With the move to 4nm, Tensor 2 could be significantly more powerful than its predecessor.

Other than the build size and Samsung’s return as the manufacturer, we don’t know much else about Google Tensor 2. The report makes mention of an increase in efficiency producing the CPU, but that won’t have any effect on its performance. However, it could prevent the Pixel 7 series from being more expensive than the Pixel 6 series.

Google hasn’t set a specific release date for the Pixel 7 series — which we assume will be the first to feature Tensor 2 — but an October launch is expected. At some point between now and then, we’ll know a lot more about it.
