TL;DR
  • A handful of early Google Pixel 6 Pro owners report minor display flickering issues when the phone is powered off.
  • The flickering issue does not appear to affect device functionality in any way.
  • It’s not clear whether or not the issue affects Pixel 6 owners.

Update: November 1, 2021 (6:48 AM ET): Google has now published a response to those experiencing display flickering issues on the Pixel 6 Pro phones. You can read the latest here.

Original article: October 28, 2021 (2:29 PM ET): The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro officially go on sale today, and those who pre-ordered the new Google phones are just now receiving them in the mail. Already, a handful of Pixel 6 Pro owners have discovered a minor (like a really minor) issue with the device’s display.

In some instances, when the Pixel 6 Pro is powered off, a short tap of the power button reveals an odd display flickering issue. For some users on Reddit, the display shows a quick flicker — an almost static-like effect — across the top part of the display. We checked our own Pixel 6 Pro for the display issue, and we can confirm that the flickering is present, though ours happens towards the bottom of the screen.

See the video below.

The Pixel 6 Pro display issue doesn’t appear to present itself when the user presses the power button to turn the device on. It only happens with quick, short taps of the button. Also, the issue does not affect device usability in the slightest. There is no flickering when the phone’s screen is turned on.

It’s not clear whether or not the quirk affects the standard Pixel 6. We haven’t found any reports on Reddit, and our own Pixel 6 unit is free of the issue.

We’ve reached out to Google for comment on the issue.

If your device is experiencing the flickering bug, or you’re concerned that your new device will show it in the future, don’t fret. Your phone will likely operate just fine.
