TL;DR
  • A camera app teardown reveals evidence to suggest the Google Pixel 6 could have new front-facing camera features.
  • The teardown shows that the punch-hole camera could move to the center rather than the usual left-alignment.
  • Additionally, the camera could support 4K video, something no Pixel phones have supported previously.

The next Pixel smartphone we expect to see should be the Google Pixel 5a. However, that phone will definitively be a budget-oriented device. What about the next Pixel flagship?

For now, we’re calling that the Google Pixel 6. Today, we gained some new evidence related to that phone thanks to some APK sleuthing from 9to5Google.

Within the latest version of the Pixel line’s camera app, code points to some big changes for the front-facing camera on a future Pixel phone. We are assuming this is the Pixel 6, but the code doesn’t use that term. Instead, it uses codenames that may or may not refer to the next Pixel flagship. For the time being, we’re going to assume that is the case, though.

Google Pixel 6: What’s on the way?

According to the APK teardown, the selfie camera of a phone presumed to be the Pixel 6 is centered, not left-aligned. This is interesting because every Pixel device with a punch-hole camera thus far has had a left-aligned cutout. Meanwhile, flagship phones from Samsung have had centered cutouts. Could Google be taking a page from Samsung’s playbook here?

Elsewhere, the code suggests that the camera within that centered cutout could be capable of 4K video recording. At the moment, recent Pixel phones can shoot 4K video with the rear camera but not the front. If this ends up panning out, the Google Pixel 6 would likely be the first Pixel with 4K selfie video support.

Keep in mind that APK teardowns can sometimes provide incorrect information. It’s very early days yet for Pixel 6 leaks, so don’t put too much stock into this. However, it would certainly be interesting to see a Pixel with a centered selfie camera, and shutterbugs would probably love to shoot 4K videos without flipping their phones around. We’ll need to wait and see how this pans out.
