Pixel 3 XL hands on
TL;DR
  • DisplayMate gave the Google Pixel 3 XL its highest rating ever bestowed upon a smartphone.
  • DisplayMate’s overall display assessment grade of A+ earned the Pixel 3 XL the DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award.
  • Hopefully, this rating means that the display problems of the Pixel 2 XL are fixed and not coming back.

If you’re concerned about the Google Pixel 3 XL display not being up-to-snuff, you might not have to worry: venerable rating organization DisplayMate just awarded the Google Pixel 3 XL with an A+ — the highest rating DisplayMate’s given to any smartphone.

The Google Pixel 3 XL earned “Very Good” to “Excellent” ratings in every single DisplayMate metric — only the third smartphone in history to do so (the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 are the other two). The Google Pixel 3 XL has now earned the DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award.

While this would be noteworthy for any smartphone, it’s especially noteworthy for the Pixel 3 XL considering the display problems which plagued the Google Pixel 2 XL. For those of you who missed out on these issues last year, the Pixel 2 XL’s display was criticized as being grainy, blotchy in low-light conditions, and suffering from a blue tint when viewing the phone off-angle.

Google Pixel 3 XL vs Pixel 3 screen

Although these display issues may not have been noticed by the casual smartphone user, it certainly was a problem for power users and put the phone’s high price (at the time) into question.

Apparently, Google listened well to all the complaints because the Google Pixel 3 XL’s display has no such issues. According to the very long and thorough review by Dr. Raymond M. Soneira — the president of DisplayMate Technologies Corporation — the Google Pixel 3 XL looks “absolutely stunning and beautiful, even to my experienced hyper-critical eyes.” In the color accuracy section, Dr. Soneira said the Pixel 3 XL is “visually indistinguishable from perfect.”

In fact, the Google Pixel 3 XL’s display is so good, DisplayMate might have to change the metrics it uses. Dr. Soneira had this to say:

“As display performance continues to improve, we have and will continue to raise the performance levels necessary to receive a DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award, so the top-tier smartphone displays will continue to evolve and change with each new generation.”
